About this book

A letter from their daughter changes an ordinary morning at Sunnyside Cottage for Thomas Dawson and his wife. Lizzie and her husband have struggled to find work, and his new position in racing stables comes with a painful condition: children cannot live there. She sends five-year-old Jessie to her grandparents, asking for forgiveness and care. Mrs. Dawson greets the news with joy, eager to prepare a room and welcome a child into the house again.

Mabel Quiller-Couch's family novel follows a young girl's need for affection and security amid adult decisions. The cottage's sunny garden and domestic preparations give way, in a later scene, to an exhausting walk with Jessie's father and a long wait for a train to London. A woman at the station offers food and rest when the child collapses. These small acts of care give readers a way to consider how children's fiction portrays family responsibility, poverty, and the difference kindness can make.
