About this book

Dick Hamilton's Fortune, or the stirring doings of a millionaire's son, opens with a preface that introduces Dick Hamilton to the boys, thousands of them. The preface hopes the boys will shake hands with Dick and become good friends.

At breakfast in the Hamilton mansion on Dick's birthday, his father says he has something very important to say that afternoon, to be told in the library at three o'clock, about certain portions of Dick's mother's will. Dick walks about like a perfect host, seeing that everyone is served before sitting down himself, with Grit at his heels, who was unhappy when away from his master. A representative of the War Department has promised to be on hand when the test is made, to see if Herr Doodlebrod's machine answers the requirements. Dick says he has not much time left, and urges haste with the ship.
