About this book
Digging for Gold, subtitled Adventures in California, is a book by R. M. Ballantyne. The first chapter introduces Frank Allfrey as passionately fond of painting and cut out for a painter, though fate, in the form of an old uncle, had decided that Frank should not follow the bent of his inclinations. Mr Allfrey says with a look of supreme contempt that nature is only fit for savages.
Frank tells his uncle eagerly that he has studied much, although he has said little about the matter, knowing his uncle's objection to it. The text says the diggings were at the mouth of a deep gorge at the lower end of the gully, with numbers of tents of all sizes and various shapes pitched on the slopes and near the banks of the river. The text says that no sooner had the travellers entered the camp than the diggers left their work and flocked round them to ask the news.
