About this book
The contents list chapter titles including The Rock, The Lovers and the Press-Gang, Our Hero Obliged to Go to Sea, and The Burglary. The text says that in those days the barbarous custom of impressment into the Royal Navy was in full operation, and that England was at war with France. A youth named Ruby Brand is described as having an old mother who was at that time in very bad health. Minnie says, Oh, Ruby, don't.
Lindsay says the town was certainly thrown into a tremendous state of some sort, for the people had no arms of any kind wherewith to defend themselves. The captain tells the leftenant to spin away at his yarn and not to venture too much commentary thereon. The text says Ruby descended and found the sea still roaring over the rock, but the rails were so far uncovered that he could venture on them.
