About this book
Poets and Dreamers: Studies and Translations from the Irish is a book by Lady Gregory. The contents list, among others, titles called Raftery, West Irish Ballads, Jacobite Ballads, Mountain Theology, Herb-Healing and Workhouse Dreams. The contents list also names titles called The Twisting of the Rope, The Marriage, The Lost Saint and The Nativity. The text says Irish history, having been forbidden in schools, has been, to a great extent, learned from Raftery's poems by the people of Mayo and of Galway.
One story has a priest put his hat in Raftery's hand and tell him the words to say, but Raftery said "I baptize you without either foot or hand, without salt or tow, beer or drink." One account says "My father went one time from Ballylee to Limerick; and there was a tinker at that time the Government wanted to get information from; something about Bonaparte it was."
