About this book
The chapter on amber says the material is not infrequently picked up among pebbles on the East Coast. An account of finding amber recalls mistaking the lump for an ordinary flint pebble until its extraordinary lightness attracted attention. Amber is said to travel faster and farther than ordinary stones because of its lightness.
The discussion argues that the terms instinct and instinctive should be limited to the action of an inherited apparatus or mechanism. The account of collecting floating life describes using a muslin net on a ring at the end of a stick and searching the contents of bottles drop by drop with a microscope.
