About this book

From an Easy Chair is a book by E. Ray Lankester. The contents list gives entries titled Tsetse-Flies and Disease, Monkeys and Fleas and The Jigger Flea, among others. The contents list further names Hypnotism and an Experiment on the Influence of the Magnet, Luminous Owls and Other Luminous Animals and Plants, and Reminiscences of Lord Kelvin, among others.

Lankester says he remembers meeting, when he was a youth, Leonard Horner, the first secretary of the society, and father-in-law of Sir Charles Lyell. Lankester also says he knew Dr. Peter Mark Roget, an original member, who was the oldest fellow of the Royal Society when he died in 1869. The text calls Stonehenge the most wonderful, mysterious, and complete of the great astronomical temples of Western Europe, come down from the absolute darkness of prehistoric ages. The text puts the main opening of the circle in alignment with the midsummer rising sun at about 1700 B.C., with a possible error of 200 years, more or less.
