About this book
The preface describes a collection of some papers contributed to the Daily Telegraph during 1908-1909 under the title Science from an Easy Chair. The account of cave-men describes sculptures, reliefs and line-engravings made on mammoth's ivory, reindeer horn, bones and stones. The discussion says line-engravings are the latest in date, judging from their position in deposits on cave floors.
A diagram of a spider identifies three pairs of spinnerets and three kinds of glands that produce liquid silk. The explanation says effective variations, whether small or great, occur in nature, and natural selection favors and perpetuates the new and fitter variety to the exclusion of the less fit. The difficulty attributed to most people concerns Darwin's supposition that slow change through natural selection and inheritance is sufficient, across enormous ages, to turn ancestral three-toed zebras into the one-toed horse.
