About this book
Secrets of Earth and Sea is a book by E. Ray Lankester. The preface says the volume is mainly a revision and reprint, with considerable additions, of articles published in daily or weekly journals. The preface says the first chapter appeared originally in "The Field."
The text says the brilliantly white chalk sediment accumulates not only on the floor of the tank, but on its sides. The text says that settling the question could be done by examining the blue light from the tanks with a polariscope. The text says minute organisms (flagellate monads) have been cultivated experimentally in a nourishing liquid, the temperature of which was raised daily by one or two degrees. The text says the "eruptions" between that of A.D. 79 and that of A.D. 1139 had been ejections of steam and cinders, unaccompanied by any flow or stream of lava.
