About this book
Dorothea Beale of Cheltenham is by Elizabeth Raikes and is illustrated. The preface says Miss Beale left ample materials for the history of her work: not only were all business documents, such as minutes of council meetings, nomination papers and examination questions, carefully preserved, she kept also all letters which could be of any interest. The preface says that she went further than merely arranging materials for a future book and in 1900 compiled a very complete History of the Ladies' College.
The text says there was full occupation, even for the strenuous spirit of Dorothea Beale, in the interests and affairs of home, but that a wider field for her energies was to open with the gates of Queen's College in 1848. The text says Mr. Llewelyn Davis rightly said that the establishment of Queen's College was an epoch in women's education. A letter addressed To Mr. Coates after a lecture he had given at Cheltenham says that what was especially regretted was that the lecture raised a number of questions to which it furnished no answers.
