About this book

Social rank and a convincing manner become tools of deception in Charles Kingston's accounts of criminal lives in Europe and America. Published in 1921, the collection includes Marie Tarnowska, Belle Star, Madame Rachel and Adam Worth. Kingston's preface explains how trial reports, newspapers and information supplied by a detective helped him assemble his material. It also considers the attention that notorious cases attract from crowds, journalists and prominent spectators.

The opening follows Tarnowska's marriage and the growing discord within her aristocratic household. Later, an account of a man claiming royal identity gives way to Richard Douglas, who poses as a baronet in London and records his crimes in a diary. These biographical sketches place personal conduct beside the public response to it. Readers interested in the history of fraud and criminal celebrity can see how claims to prestige worked on trust, and how courtroom reporting helped shape reputations.
