About this book

Dotty Dimple wakes in a contrary mood and announces to her sister Prudy that she means to be naughty all day. Sophie May builds this children's story around a girl whose tenderness and quick temper repeatedly pull her in different directions. A game of keeping house turns into an argument, and the warmth of the Parlin family's breakfast room throws Dotty's discontent into sharper relief.

The story mixes comic dialogue with lessons about patience, honesty and the wish to have one's own way. Prudy tries to keep the peace, while Dotty's exchanges with her cousin Johnny show how easily a challenge can influence her choices. An outing in a small boat brings a more serious test of judgment and responsibility. Readers interested in older children's fiction will find a strongly guiding narrator, lively misunderstandings and a close view of family expectations.
