About this book
A train trip to Indiana fills young Dotty Dimple with excitement, from the food packed for the ride to the fifty cents she can spend along the way. Travelling with her father, she watches fellow passengers and takes great pride in managing her own appearance. Sophie May gives her thoughts a comic edge: Dotty's confidence, impatience and fondness for her reflection make the railway carriage as interesting as the destination.
At Aunt Maria's house, Dotty wakes to birds, household bustle and little Flyaway demanding her attention. Her pleasure in the visit mingles with thoughts of Prudy back home and questions about how God can hear her prayers in different places. This children's novel brings family affection, everyday conduct and a child's private reasoning into the same scene. Readers interested in older family stories will find both the practical details of travel and the small misunderstandings between children and adults.
