About this book
A restless little girl with a quick tongue and a busy imagination grows up among relatives who have plenty to say about her behavior. Telling her childhood memories to Horace, Prudy, Dotty, and Flyaway, Aunt Madge introduces herself as Margaret Parlin, once nicknamed Totty-wax by her father. Her invented stories include a tiny lost sister and another girl who looks just like her, convenient explanations that soon trouble her mother.
Set in Maine, Aunt Madge's Story combines family comedy with lessons about honesty, friendship, and conscience. Sophie May lets the adult narrator recall how difficult it was to separate make-believe from deliberate falsehood. An incident involving a hatchet brings teasing from Ned and Abner, while Margaret's mother hopes for a confession. The conversational storytelling and small domestic incidents offer a close look at childhood reasoning and the ways adults try to guide it.
