About this book
Sixteen-year-old Jacob, known as Cob, gets a voice in a family decision when his father's struggling metalworking firm considers a fresh start at Arrowfield. His three uncles, Dick, Jack and Bob, combine engineering knowledge with a fondness for games and teasing. Their easy friendship with Cob gives warmth to a business discussion shadowed by shrinking profits, possible strikes and the risks of starting again.
George Manville Fenn tells this adventure through Cob's own lively account. The industrial setting brings furnaces, forges and machinery into a story about family loyalty and learning responsibility. In one tense episode, Cob searches a smithy for a heavy steel trap, then hides it in his desk, troubled by what he is doing. Readers interested in older children's fiction will find workshop life, a dog called Piter and a young narrator whose eagerness runs ahead of his judgment.
