About this book

A typewriter and two scratching pens fill a plain office at the De Beers diamond mines, where three young clerks reveal sharply different temperaments. Oliver West prepares rifles for volunteer drill, Anson prefers his flute, and Ingleborough brings news of a search for suspected diamond theft. Their jokes and irritation establish personal tensions within Kimberley, the mining town whose siege forms the historical setting of George Manville Fenn's adventure for young readers.

Later, West and Ingleborough are held in a guarded camp, studying ponies and sentries while they prepare to attempt an escape after dark. They save food for the effort and consider how to obtain rifles, while doubts about Anson and illicit diamonds persist. The story combines workplace rivalry with wartime uncertainty. Its suspense comes from close observation, practical planning and the risk that a small change in the camp could upset their hopes.
