About this book

Richard Peveril arrives in Michigan's copper country with his last dollar spent and no certain place to sleep. When a young miner falls between the cars of a departing train, Peveril pulls him to safety and gains a friend in Tom Trefethen. Their meeting brings the search for work into a landscape of smoking chimneys, shaft houses and crowded mining communities. Kirk Munroe's 1898 novel places a young man's uncertain prospects beside the physical demands of the Upper Peninsula mines.

Underground, friendship becomes something practical. Trapped beside dark water, Peveril depends on a miner's advice, a candle and Tom's gift of a watertight match case to recover his bearings. This adventure for younger readers combines industrial surroundings with danger, resourcefulness and suspicion about other people's motives. Its appeal lies in the concrete details of survival and in the contrast between Peveril's outward confidence and his need for help.
