About this book
Dr. Johnson's Works: Life, Poems, and Tales, Volume 1 is the first of nine volumes of the works of Samuel Johnson. The advertisement states its wish and diligent endeavour to give as accurate a text as possible, to which it has subjoined notes. The text says Samuel Johnson returned in February, 1734, to his native city and published proposals for printing, by subscription, the Latin poems of Politian.
The text prints short verses, among them Summe Deus, qui semper amas quodcunque creasti, with markers In lecto, die passionis, Apr. 13, 1781, and In lecto, Dec. 25, 1782. A note says the night referred to by Dr. Johnson was that in which a paralytic stroke had deprived him of his voice. One letter says that the writer will have no mistress, that Mr. Thrale will have no wife, and that the little flock will have no mother.
