About this book
Preface to a Dictionary of the English Language is a piece of writing by Samuel Johnson. The preface says the writer of dictionaries is among unhappy mortals, and that the lexicographer can only hope to escape reproach. The preface speaks of adjusting the orthography, which it describes as unsettled and fortuitous to that time.
The text says every language has its anomalies, which, though inconvenient and in themselves once unnecessary, must be tolerated among the imperfections of human things. The preface also says many words have obtained such exuberance of signification that it was scarcely possible to collect all their senses. The writer says he has devoted this book, the labour of years, to the honour of his country, and that much of his life has been lost under the pressures of disease.
