About this book
Drawings and Pharmacy in Al-Zahrawi's 10th-Century Surgical Treatise is a study by Sami Khalaf Hamarneh. The author says the study is concerned only with the last treatise, on surgery, of Abū al-Qāsim al-Zahrāwī, also known as Abulcasis.
The text says the introduction of the writings of Abulcasis to Western Europe was through the Latin translation of his surgical treatise (maqālah) by Gerard of Cremona (d. 1187). The text says Al-Zahrāwī, being associated with war casualties and writing his treatise about the end of the 10th century, no doubt had the experience of dealing with cases involving injuries caused by arrows. In cases of damaged blood vessels, the text says he tied the arteries by ligature, a practice of which he was a pioneer.
