About this book
Early French Prisons is by Arthur Griffiths. The introduction says that the judicial administration of France had its origin in the Feudal System. The introduction adds that the great nobles ruled their estates side by side with, and not under, the King.
The book names one Hugues de Bourgueil as provost in the latter end of the sixteenth century, and says that among his prisoners was a young Italian, named Gonsalvi. The book says that Madame de Bourgueil, on the eve of her elopement, gained possession of the prison keys and released the whole of the three hundred prisoners in custody. The book quotes instructions that the King intends to arrest the Sieur Fouquet on his leaving the castle (Nantes), and that forty musketeers will be employed.
