About this book
Early Woodcut Initials, first published in 1908, is selected and annotated by Oscar Jennings, M.D. According to its title page it contains over thirteen hundred reproductions of ornamental letters of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and the book is dedicated to his wife.
The notes discuss particular alphabets and dated books, for example a Kalendrier des Bergers of 1497 with a Q showing a cock in the Lyons style, and a pine-cone pattern of letters that appears in many books and had already been used at Nuremberg. The captions are grouped by place, such as Ulm, Nuremberg, Basle and Strasburg, and they include initials by Urs Graf, Hans Holbein and Hans Weiditz, and a set of Dance of Death initials.
