About this book
Of the Decorative Illustration of Books Old and New is by Walter Crane. The preface says the book had its origin in three (Cantor) Lectures given before the Society of Arts in 1889, and that further chapters have been written on the very active period in printing and decorative book-illustration seen since that time.
The list of illustrations names, among others, William Blake: Songs of Innocence, 1789, Dante Gabriel Rossetti: Tennyson's Poems, 1857 and Randolph Caldecott: Headpiece to Bracebridge Hall, 1877. A comparison in the book describes the text, torn into an irregularly ragged edge, as squeezing itself together like the passengers in a crowded omnibus, reluctantly to admit a chimney-sweep.
