About this book
Edward MacDowell: A Great American Tone Poet, His Life and Music is by John Fielder Porte. The opening pages print two tributes to MacDowell, one signed Jules Massenet and one signed Edvard Grieg. The text says MacDowell had also to learn the French language, and the person who taught him French discovered that the young American had a decided gift for drawing.
The text says careful discussion with his mother resulted in their selection of Stuttgart, Germany, where MacDowell entered the Conservatorium. A catalogue of works lists "OPUS 40. SIX LOVE SONGS, FOR VOICE AND PIANOFORTE. Composed , 1890", among them the songs "Sweet Blue-Eyed Maid" and "Sweetheart, Tell Me". The text says the pieces called "EDGAR THORN PIECES" appeared under the pseudonym of Edgar Thorn, and that the royalties resulting from their sale should be paid to a nurse who was at one time needed in a household.
