About this book
Cardinal Newman as a Musician, by Edward Bellasis, was reprinted with additions and musical examples from "The Month" of September, 1891. The text cites a remark of St. Philip Neri's latest biographer that "Our Saint" was profoundly convinced of "a mysterious and a mighty power" in music and in song. Of a pupil's violin playing in September, 1865, the text quotes the words "To my mind music is an important part of education, where boys have a turn for it."
A quoted line dated February, 1820 reads "Our music club at St. John's has been offered, and has accepted, the music-room, for our weekly private concerts." The text says the study of the application of music to words was interesting enough, as the Cardinal remarked in April, 1886. A list of numbers gives, among others, thirty by Father Faber and thirteen by Father Newman.
