About this book
Egmont is a tragedy in five acts by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, translated by Anna Swanwick. The introductory note says that in 1775, when Goethe was twenty-six, he began to write Egmont, and that after working on it at intervals for twelve years he finished it at Rome in 1787. The note says the scene of the drama is laid in the Low Countries at the beginning of the revolt against Spain.
In one scene, a speaker asks why they are all so devoted to Count Egmont, and answers that one can read in his face that he loves us. Ruysum says St. Quintin was his last battle, and Buyck cries that at Gravelines they had sharp work of it there. In a talk between Clara and Egmont, Egmont says that it is otherwise in love, and that for the most part those only obtain love who seek it not, and Clara asks whether he learned this from his own experience.
