About this book
Little Eyolf is by Henrik Ibsen, translated with an introduction by William Archer. The introduction says Little Eyolf was written in Christiania during 1894 and published in Copenhagen on December 11 in that year. The introduction says Ibsen told his French translator, Count Prozor, that the original of the Rat-Wife was a little old woman who came to kill rats at the school where he was educated.
In the introduction's view, Allmers becomes a type of what it roughly calls the “free moral agent”, and Eyolf a type of humanity conceived as passive and suffering. A bracketed direction shows Alfred Allmers dressed as before, sitting on the bench with his arms on the table, gazing absently and immovably out over the water. Allmers tells Rita that he mistook the direction, for there was no path or track, and that he went on all day and all the next night.
