About this book
Count Alarcos; a Tragedy is by Benjamin Disraeli, who notes that there is no historical authority for the events of the celebrated Ballad on which this Tragedy is founded. The opening note fixes the events in the thirteenth century, when the kingdom of Castille had recently obtained that supremacy in Spain. The note calls Burgos, its capital, a magnificent city, and its famous Cathedral a masterpiece of Christian architecture.
In one scene a speaker marked ALAR. addresses Florimonde, saying peace dwells within no lordly roof in Burgos and that they have come for triumph. In another scene a speaker says “My wife died suddenly,” the Prior asks about a life that should have shielded hers, and a speaker marked ALAR. asks whether prayers and penances can avail. In yet another scene a speaker offers gold, saying count it thyself, and Oran answers: “Count on my faith, I stand prepared to prove it.”
