About this book
Franz Liszt, by James Huneker, contains illustrated discussions whose contents list addresses the musician's art and character, piano pieces, composition, contemporaries, pupils, and pianoforte virtuosi. The account identifies 1847 and the sojourn at Weimar as the beginning of the musician's third artistic period, which the account calls the most attractive and fruitful. The account describes a circle surrounding Liszt that included Raff, Von Bülow, Tausig, Cornelius, Joseph Joachim, Schumann, Robert Franz, Litolff, Dionys Pruckner, William Mason, and Lassen.
The account says Liszt and the Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein wrote his chief literary works together, including the study of Chopin, for which the princess supplied local colour. Mrs. Kemble's Records of Later Life is introduced as relating an incident involving a tribute of admiration from the citizen workmen of Coblentz.
