About this book
Eidolon, "Or, The Course of a Soul; and Other Poems," is credited on its title page to "WALTER R. CASSELS." The contents list names Eidolon, Alcesté and Pygmalion, and "Miscellaneous Poems" such as "Ode to Fancy," "The Stormy Petrel" and "The Mermaid." The sonnets in the contents list include one "Written at Ulleswater" and one "To Ella."
The verse pictures standing alone with Nature where man's step "Hath never bowed a grass-blade 'neath its weight." A stanza asks "When did a woman's spirit true and sweet, E'er close its issues against pity's cry." A speaker addresses "Bright May" and says "thou shalt be my beadsman."
