About this book

A missed report from Eden unsettles a communications room on Earth. The colony has followed its schedule without a single delay, so a supervisor's attempts to blame careless settlers or faulty equipment soon sound unconvincing. Mark Clifton's 1960 science fiction novel begins with this small breach of routine, setting ordinary office irritation against a problem that may demand unfamiliar ways of thinking. The introductory sequence of propositions challenges unquestioned authority and asks whether accepted causes, effects and natural laws might be understood differently.

Among the colonists, Jed and Martha face a more immediate task: helping their neighbors recover from a sudden disruption. Martha looks for practical ways to provide hot water, but attempts to start a fire fail even when the settlers use familiar methods. These scenes connect the larger puzzle of Eden with the habits people rely on during an emergency.
