About this book
Millennium, by Everett B. Cole, carries a teaser line saying there are devices a high-level culture could produce that simply don't belong in the hands of incompetents of lower cultural evolution. A character named Konar puts a battered object on the bench, a piece that had once been a precisely fabricated piece of equipment, but whose identity was almost lost. A character named Meinora says an inspection team was supposed to visit once a cycle for about fifty cycles, then once each five cycles after that.
Asked what happened this time, one speaker answers that the Merokian Confederation happened. A character named Gerda tells a merchant that they shall make note of the merchant's name, and adds that the dungeon of Menstal is no pleasant place. At the lip of the moat, a charger pitches forward, throwing its rider over its head, and Flor manages to land uninjured.
