About this book
Elementary Cryptanalysis by Helen Fouché Gaines was originally published in 1939. Its preface explains that cryptography covers the entire field of secret writing, while cryptanalysis is the branch dealing with the solution and reading of cryptic messages, and it notes that works devoted purely to analysing such writing were rare for the general reader.
In one passage the text describes Lord Bacon's cipher, with its A-font and B-font, and notes that a message of 29 A's and 16 B's could be shown with a deck of playing cards or a fence of 45 palings. Another passage gives the Trithème alphabet written in the digits 1, 2 and 3, and a worked example tries a trigram as a possible key fragment. Further text describes a cipher of the Nihilist type, with squares of 5 x 5 or 6 x 6 followed by columnar transposition.
