About this book
Carpentry divides building costs into the cost of material and the cost of labor as the starting point for its discussion of estimating. The instructions for studs allow extra pieces for doubling corners, doors and windows, and gables, while stating that barns and sheds do not require them. The sheathing instructions calculate the surface to be covered and deduct openings before making additions for unmatched boards.
The rafter instructions describe advancing a square through full feet of a run and allowing for a remaining fraction. The sash-fitting instructions allow enough play to prevent subsequent paint or varnish from causing the stool to bind the lower rail. The side casings are placed flush with the jambs, and the instructions explain that a stop bead conceals the resulting crack.
