About this book
This edition brings together Elizabeth Montagu's correspondence from 1720 to 1761 across two volumes, with an index and a Robinson family pedigree. One chapter is headed Engagement and Early Married Life, and it mentions Mr. Brockman of Beechborough, a man who had been in love with Elizabeth Robinson for some time before she made her final choice.
Letters from others appear beside hers. The Duchess of Portland writes about lost letters and asks whether Elizabeth has read Night Thoughts, and the text gives an account of Dr. Young's losses in his family. One letter from Hill Street is dated July 6, 1758, and is addressed to Miss Carter. Another is dated from Bath on April 10, 1741. Mrs. Carter is described as a learned woman of humble and unambitious character.
