About this book
Emil and the Detectives is labelled A Story for Children and is by Erich Kästner. The contents list chapters called, among others, The Detectives Assemble, A Taxi Is Trailed and Emil Visits Police Headquarters. A speaker in the opening text says he wanted to call a book Petersilie in the Jungle and calls that a swell title.
A head waiter named Nietenführ says that a man can write only about things he knows and has seen. The Professor objects that if we steal money from him, we'll be the same sort of thieves that he is, and Emil agrees that if he takes anything from anybody secretly then he is a thief. Emil's mother says that he hasn't any faults, really, and blows her nose in an excess of emotion.
