About this book
English Translations from the Greek has the subtitle A Bibliographical Survey and is by Finley Melville Kendall Foster. The title page says the survey was submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, in the Faculty of Philosophy, Columbia University. The contents list includes a Preface, an Introduction, The Growth of Translation, The Translations and an Index, among others.
The author says the list aims to include only such works as profess to be English renderings of Greek writings. The author says adaptations, paraphrases and the like are not included, nor are solitary translations of excerpts from Greek literature. The author notes that in some cases, chiefly before 1700, the English translation was made from a French, Italian, or Latin version of the Greek original. The listing gives entries for Herodotus such as Urania, Book VIII of Herodotus, translated into English by John Murray, 1882.
