About this book
Twelve-year-old Eric Williams can hardly contain his excitement at the prospect of school. Raised in England by his aunt and cousin Fanny while his parents live in India, he has grown up among gardens, streams and affectionate religious teaching. Fanny sees his quick intelligence and honesty, but worries about his pride and temper. Their different expectations give F. W. Farrar's school novel its first tension: the boy welcomes a new world whose influence his cousin fears.
At Roslyn, friendship, sport and the wish to fit in test the lessons Eric learned at home. By sixteen, he captains the school eleven while neglecting his studies and becoming less attentive to his younger brother Vernon. Christian belief shapes the narrator's account of these gradual changes. Readers interested in older school stories will find a close concern with character, the pressure of companions and the responsibility one brother bears toward another.
