About this book
Thirteen-year-old Walter Evson leaves a loving lakeside home for his first experience of Saint Winifred’s, a public school beside a sheltered bay. His upbringing has mixed outdoor freedom with lessons in truthfulness, kindness and obedience. F. W. Farrar sets that early training against the demands of life among unfamiliar boys, making school a place where character is tested as closely as knowledge.
A quarrel with Kenrick shows how easily friendship can fray. Walter’s thoughtless mention of a family matter leads to suspicion, angry words and an attempted explanation through friends and a letter. The narrator follows the boys’ pride and resentment with clear moral commentary, giving the novel the tone of a story about conduct as well as school life. Readers interested in older school fiction will find detailed landscapes, parental hopes and the difficult work of repairing trust.
