About this book
The front matter gives the series name The Expositor's Bible, edited by W. Robertson Nicoll, and a list of volumes on Old Testament books with their writers, beginning with Genesis. One passage takes up an episode of the prophet Elijah and quotes Bishop Hall and Professor Milligan on it, with the commentator saying he will deal with the narrative plainly.
Another passage discusses the brazen serpent of the wilderness, found in Num. xxi. 9, and notes that incense was burned to it long after, and it compares Num. xxi. 4 with xxxiii. 42 on Zalmonah or Punon. Elsewhere there is a run of numbered footnotes citing Professor Lumby, the Journal of the Asiatic Society and Dioscorides and Pliny, with remarks on a sun-dial near Delhi and on the use of figs.
