About this book

At fifteen, Winona Woodward already carries much of her family's worry. Her widowed mother fears that wartime expenses will force changes at their beloved home, Highfield, while Winona's easygoing brother Percy treats the problem lightly. Aunt Harriet offers a practical plan: Winona should compete for a scholarship to Seaton High School and, if successful, live with her aunt. Education becomes both a chance to develop beyond household responsibilities and preparation for earning a living.

Published in 1916, Angela Brazil's school novel places those hopes alongside the ordinary pleasures of girls' company. An outdoor quarantine camp brings improvised tennis courts, uneven cricket pitches, reading on rainy days, and evening hymns. These scenes give the story a lively social texture, with makeshift games and shared routines as much a part of growing up as examinations. Readers interested in older school stories will find a picture of girls' education shaped by family expectations, friendship, and wartime change.

About the author

Angela Brazil

Angela Brazil was one of the first British writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories", written from the characters' point of view and intended primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. In the first half of the 20th century she published nearly 50 books of girls' fiction, the vast majority being boarding school stories.
