About this book

Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie, is by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. A note says the distinctive feature of this edition of Evangeline is the Plan of Study, which forms the latter part of the volume. The note says the plan for the study of Evangeline has proved successful in securing very satisfactory work from classes varying greatly in ability.

The Acadians had refused to take the oath of allegiance to the English, and this caused them to be regarded with suspicion and fear. An order required all the males of Grand Pre and vicinity ten years old and upwards to assemble in the church to hear a Proclamation of the King. The text describes a herdsman mounted upon his horse, with Spanish saddle and stirrups, arrayed in gaiters and doublet of deerskin. A list of composition subjects includes Acadian Life, The Notary, Character of Gabriel, Character of Evangeline and The Betrothal Feast, among others.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Longfellow was the most widely read poet in the English-speaking world in his own century and close to unread in the next, a fall worth explaining rather than simply repeating. He taught modern languages at Harvard, made the first American translation of Dante's Commedia, and wrote for a public that memorised verse as a matter of course.
