About this book
A mountain stream, a late harvest and a figure brought to life from clay show the range of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's verse. This collection gathers short lyrics, ballads, sonnets, narrative poems and verse dramas, arranged as nearly as possible in chronological order. Its contents include The Village Blacksmith, Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha and Tales of a Wayside Inn, alongside sections of poems on slavery and translations.
Two compact nature poems sit beside the opening of The Masque of Pandora. In The Brook and the Wave, fresh water from the mountains reaches a restless ocean wave; Aftermath follows the gathering of a late crop as the seasons change. The dramatic scene then turns to the gods, with Zeus giving life to Pandora's clay form. Readers can move between these brief reflections and the longer works to compare Longfellow's approaches to landscape, feeling, storytelling and dramatic speech.
