About this book
Poems by William Ernest Henley is shown here as the tenth impression of 1907, with the first edition dated January 1898. A dedication to his wife, dated April 1888, offers her his little sheaf of songs.
The contents list numbered poems by first line, followed by the groups London Voluntaries, whose parts are marked Grave, Andante con Moto, Scherzando, Largo e Mesto and Allegro Maestoso, and Rhymes and Rhythms, which begins with a Prologue. A poem dated 1875 praises the generous gods for the joy of life, and the next begins with the line Fill a glass with golden wine. In a poem set on a June morning, a blackbird sings that death is fleet and life is sweet.
