About this book

A climb up Fuji begins Lafcadio Hearn's 1898 collection of essays, placing the sacred mountain beside the practical business of pilgrimage. From an inn at Gotemba, he prepares with experienced guides, warm clothing and a pilgrim's staff before setting out along roads of volcanic sand. His account connects the mountain's appearance with the beliefs, legends and customs surrounding its ascent.

Elsewhere, the sound of frogs in ricefields becomes a way of thinking about how a place lives in memory. Hearn also considers Buddhist inscriptions, explaining the ideas behind their language and the care required to translate them. The second part gathers short reflective pieces about beauty and remembered experience, introduced through a comparison between psychology and Eastern religious thought.
