About this book
Henry Vizetelly's Facts About Champagne and Other Sparkling Wines is dated 1879 and has 112 illustrations. Its title page says the facts were collected during numerous visits to the Champagne and other viticultural districts of France and the principal remaining wine-producing countries of Europe. The frontispiece shows the disgorging, liqueuring, corking, stringing and wiring of champagne.
The contents begin with chapters on the origin of champagne and the vintage in the Champagne, and later chapters treat the sparkling wines of Germany, of Austro-Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Russia, and the blanquette of Limoux. In one passage the author describes the establishment of Messrs. Pol Roger and Co. at Epernay, a red brick chateau with a courtyard, celliers, stables and bottle-sheds. Another gives prices of Verzenay wine in francs the pièce for several vintages.
