About this book
Four Months Among the Gold-Finders in Alta California is a diary of an expedition from San Francisco to the gold districts. The preface says the accompanying diary was sent home by the Author merely for the entertainment of the members of his own family and a few private friends.
A man in the text says he calculated his crop of wheat this year would yield a hundred fanegas for every one sown. Colonel Mason, the new governor of the State, received the visitors with great politeness, but said that the war, if war it deserved to be called, was now at an end. The diary describes a visit to the encampment of the Indians after work was over, where about a dozen of them were found eagerly engaged in gambling.
