About this book
New gloves and slippers for a holiday party become a family dilemma in the city of Mishaumok. Faith Gartney wants to look presentable, while her mother worries about asking her father, already troubled by money owed to him. The household displays handsome objects yet struggles over smaller purchases. Whitney uses this opening to connect a teenage girl's social hopes with the uneven finances and expectations of her home.
Later, at Cross Corners, Faith meets Margaret and Paul Rushleigh after church. Their visit revives old friendships and brings fresh uncertainty about her own feelings and her parents' hopes. Calls on Aunt Henderson and encounters with a kindly minister place personal decisions beside family care and religious life. This American novel for younger readers offers closely observed domestic scenes, with clothing, meals and conversation revealing the pressures of growing up.
