About this book

A cow leaps over the moon, a mouse runs up a clock, and an old woman sets off to sweep cobwebs from the sky. Favorite Nursery Rhymes gathers short verses in which ordinary chores, food and animals become occasions for nonsense. Little Boy Blue sleeps beneath a haycock, Little Miss Muffet meets a spider, and the traveller bound for St. Ives encounters a puzzle involving cats and sacks.

The collection mixes counting rhymes, small stories and lines built around repeated sounds. Its versions sometimes offer a surprise: Jack runs away with a pudding stick, while Little Bo-Peep takes up her crook to search for the flock. The title pages credit Ethel Franklin Betts with the pictures, and the illustration list includes both colour and black-and-white work. For reading aloud or comparing remembered verses, the book offers a compact selection of nursery poetry with brisk rhythms and abrupt turns.
