About this book
Fenwick's Career is a book by Mrs. Humphry Ward. A prefatory word holds that the artist may gather from any field, so long as he sacredly respects what other artists have already made their own by the transmuting processes of the mind. The prefatory word adds that the story told in the book owes something to the past, in its picturing of the present, though in much less degree.
Fenwick walks to a window and looks out upon a Westmoreland valley in the first flush of spring. Phoebe crouches with the letters on her lap, seized by a lonely agony and a blackness of despair, her eyes fixed on the picture. A palette on the table is laden with some dark pigment with which Fenwick had just been sketching in part of his new picture. A woman, it appeared, had gone from Montreal to a fruit-farm in the Hamilton district.
